Our story begins with a girl named Marykate, or by those who knew her well MK. 65 sister was created to tell her story. She was a fearless, kind, brave, and determined girl. While those qualities were natural to her, she also fiercely protected them from another part of her story, which was that she was diagnosed with a genetic lung disease called Cystic Fibrosis. Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is also known as 65 Roses by young children who have difficulty pronouncing the disease, which is also where the name 65 Sister was inspired.
CF causes lung infections and over time makes the ability to breathe gradually more difficult. Think of living each day by breathing through a straw. This is the closest comparison we can make to what it is like to have this disease. Over 70,000 people worldwide spend their lives breathing this way.
In January of 2017 Marykate passed away from complications with Cystic Fibrosis. Her older sister, Jade, founded 65 Sister to honor the legacy Marykate lived for 18 years. A legacy of bravery and strength, truly embracing the gift of life. We have added a small MK to most of the pieces we have created in our shop. We believe this is a way to tell Marykate's story, as well as inspire conversations to tell the story of all with CF.
We believe this story of thousands of people fighting to breathe is one worth telling. Each face of CF matters. Each loss from CF matters. 65 matters. The reality is fighting to breathe is their story, until a cure is found. By joining this community and sharing the 65 story, together, we can make a difference in their lives.
